Strange box

I was doing some research around my a/c - it does not work properly and I tried to find out where it could be leaking - and I came across a rather disturbing wire mess under the dash.

i also found a connector that seems to have belonged to an older radio - a PO installed an aftermarket unit - and which seems to be connected to a box hidden behind the a/c evaporator (see the top red circle). the box got cooling fins across the bottom, but i really can't see any more unless i remove the evaporator.

does anyone have any idea what that is?

second and hopefully rather simpler question: how do i remove the evaporator? does anyone know how it is secured to the body in this particular setup? I maybe should mention that this is an Australian delivered RHD model. I guess this is the reason why my smugglers box is too small to house the evaporator.

cheers

georgie

That all looks like PO stereo stuff. What year is the car? In my Carrera the evaporator is in a box down inside the smugglers box. That seems to be out in the open. Maybe an aftermarket installation.

the car is a 1988 cabrio.
the smugglers box is there but really small, i guess that is because the steering goes through there rather than on the other side like on the European or US cars.

does anyone else have the evaporator in there as well? i would not mind taking it out to have a look, anyone know how it is mounted?

Can't help on the evaporator, but your description of the mystery box sounds like it could be a pre-amp for the stereo set up. Just a guess based only on the fins you mention and the stereo wiring in proximity.
