dual power window failure
Hey all, both of my power windows stopped working tonight on the way home from work. Car is an 84 3.2. Power window fuse (#21 in the fuse box) is fine. Power window relay seems fine also. To thicken the plot, I popped an old (20 years old) 25 amp fuse in the #21 slot and it immediately blew out. Any feedback is appreciated.

I'm not sure how a larger fuse would die but the original is fine. I'm afraid that does not make sense. I'm don't know what else is on that fuse but if a fuse blew the instant you put it in I think you have your answer. Start tracking it down.

Try new window switches, and use the ones with the brass terminals - they are made better and last longer.
The passenger side window is wired in with the driver side passenger window switch, that being the forward one on the driver door so if one goes bad the other may not work either. Keeping some spare window switches in the car to try out in an emergency can be helpful sometimes. Hope that helps is some way, but electrical problems can be weird... |
Try new switches. Mine did the same thing. I replaced all three at the same time which was very easy to do. Just change one wire at a time. All three work perfect now.
Good luck! Best regards, Booney1golf 87 911 Wide-body Cab - And I thought Golf was addicting! |
Please don't overfuse that rating (position) whatever you do,..otherwise,.......MAYBE switches are on order, or you've an intermittent grounding issue. Probably bad (old?) switches, however not a certainty, at all.

Did you look at the back of the switches to make sure that none of the connectors came loose?
I just put a new stereo system in my car - during the process, I pulled the door panels a number of times - a couple of times, when I turned the ignition switch, the fuse blew, after putting another new fuse in and playing with the connections, everything was fine. |
