SC- door lock minor problem
 

My driver side door will only let me lock the door with the key.

In other words, my passenger side door can be locked by turning the round knob as the passenger gets out. passenger opens door, turns knob, gets out, shuts door, and door is locked when closed

Not so with driver side. Im not close to the car other wise i would go check if the knob moves on its own from locked to unlocked position when i shut door, or something else. i cant remember since i have been just using the key for so long now..

anyway, any ideas?

Well, you may need to open the panel and look inside of the door where the locking mechanism is to see if it is traveling along it's path properly. Simulate a closed door by turn the latch in the closed position then check the internal movements of the components. You need a flash light.

When I replaced my trigger, the push pin was too long and it did not allow my door to lock properly. I had to shave down the new pin. Bingo she works. While I was in there, I lubed the components and she works like new with so little effort.

If your handle comes loose or the pin is broken, it may not push that pin where it needs to be to operate the locking mechanism.

Your car door is working exactly as the good Doctor intended. That is how it is supposed to be so you don't lock your keys in the car. It came that way from the factory.

My wife says it is to remind me to be a gentleman because I get out first and go around to let her out, and as I am going around to open her door she pushes down the lock on my door, and as she is getting out I push her lock down and close the door.

as i sit here, away from the car, i recall that if i open the driver door and attempt to turn the round knob on the door to lock it, it will not turn at all. Yet, once i close the door, it will...and the key works also

really? so your saying its actually my passenger door lock thats broken?

Actualy my passanger side will allow the car to lock when open but the driver side will not when open. This make perfect sense.

It was meant to be able to lock with the door open.

have you tried holding the trigger on the outside when you shut the drivers door. many import drivers sides are like. the passenger side doesnt need that, they arent the ones with the keys.

A little further explanation.... it was designed that way to prevent you from locking yourself out of the car, actually it ensures you have a key when you lock your car and gives you a better chance of having the key in your possession when you return to the car and intend to enter it again.

Only one door is needed to operate in this way in order to provide this function.

It would be an inconvenience without the added benefit by doing this to the passenger door as usually the passenger is not equipped with a spare key to lock their door, additionally it would require a single operator with no passenger to lock both doors with the key.

Apparently this system works well as you cant find many threads titled "Help, I have locked myself out of my car." :D

It does in mine (78SC) but not much of an explanation.

Look at it this way... at least you had the good sense to post the question here first before you went tearing your door apart only to discover that there was nothing wrong with it. :D

Now just don't get bored and go screwing with your air/fuel screw. There are way to many of those threads going up.:rolleyes:
