So the track car I bought has racing seats, but the PO gave me the originals as well.
Usually I'm a bit of a hoarder and hate to part with anything. BUT... car seats take up a lot of storage space and the landlord may eventually tell me to get them out of the garage. Also, I can't ever imagine that I'll want to convert this particular car back to stock. With that said - do you guys think it's worth holding on to them? ![]() ------------------ '71 911E with Webers Golden Gate Region PCA http://www.geocities.com/edrecinto/ |

My original seats are in slightly better condition than that and have kept them.
They add to the value of the car, as most people prefer 'original'. The cost of recovering them with leather is much more than replacement aftermarket seats ie. Corbeau: ![]() I will hang on to the originals as long as I have room! |

I'd sell them, there's tons of seats for sale for probably less than it would cost to get yours fixed up if you ever decided to go back to original. When I put sport seats in mine, I got rid of the originals, they take up too much space in the garage!

I'm going to sell the Recaro sport seats out of my car when I have enough for Corbeau Targas of Konig 5000s.
I love the old sprt seats but they are just too far gone I am afraid. |

Steve: to answer your question, I have no idea. It's tough for me to put a value on seats in rough condition. I know what they're worth in mint condition, but these definitely aren't mint.
Leland: How are YOU going to put a value on those seats? |

Sander, I figure I'll give 'em to someone who can restore them for about $300 or so.
Leather is utterly shot...and the driverside recliner cable is broken and would need replacing. I know the Recaro sport seats are hard to find and I wish mine were in better shape. But for the same amount it would cost to recover them I can go out and get a set of new seats. |

Leland, I don't suppose you have a picture of them you could post or send me...
I'd like to compare them to mine. [This message has been edited by sander (edited 06-06-2001).] |

Sander...the photo with your beginning post. Those the seats you were considering keeping? If so, hate to clue you, but they are not original '71E seats...those are high backs from a '74 or later car. Original '71E seats had lower backs...optional sports seats from '71 also had lower backs, with headrests that "plugged in".

In the condition they are in, I would not worry about selling them. My 89 Coupe came with the factory sport seats with the "Porsche" scripted fabric. They were immaculate and had no faults. They only problem is they heavy really heavy and I could not use harness belts adequately with them, so I bought Recaro SRD's. I wanted to keep them for future sales but I figured, what the hell, I'll stick em in Panorama for a price I could live with selling them $1500 plus shipping. That would pay for my new seats and some. They sold in a week. A guess my point is, if you have somebody that want them, sell them when you have a interested buyer. It's no good holding on to something that collect dust in the corner of your garage.

pwd72s is correct: those are not pre-74 seats. In fact, those are probably worth more if the truth were known. The standard (non-sport) vinyl early seats are really not worth much. I sold one in fine shape for $25 just to be rid of it.
Early sport seats, on the other hand, are worth a bundle and a half, but I digress. If the ones in your pics are the ones you're thinking about selling, I'd do it. There are thousands of those seats out there; no real value in keeping them around. Chris C. |
