Targa window trim question
 

Hi--

I have a 1977 911 Targa. I am replacing the rear window seal and I have a question about installing the trim. There seems to be general disagreement on this board about whether the window, seal and trim has to be installed as an assembly or if the trim can be installed after the the window and seal installtion. It seems that the window installation would be easier if the window and seal is installed followed by the trim.

I too would like to know this! I am wanting to change the trim on my targa back to chrome, it was unfortunately changed to black when the PO replaced all the rubber on the car last year. All my searching turned up this unanswered question...

I know the front windshield will be easier to pop out and replace the trim before putting it back in, but, since the targa back window is a huge PITA to get out and back on, is it possible to pull out the old trim (don't care if it gets destroyed) and push in the new chrome trim?? The rubber is less than a year old so that shouldn't be an issue.

Anyone done this before successfully (or unsuccessfully)??

The trim is inserted in the seal with the targa rear window off the car. Here's my thread on this topic.

I had actually read your thread, thanks. I have a new seal so do not need to do all of that if not necessary, I am wondering if the trim CAN be taken out and new trim put back in with the glass in place.... I had no idea it may be so hard and bought all the trim already front and rear

I would like to know where to get the seal that's on the Targa bar the meets up with the door and targa top.

anyone changed the trim without removing the window?

They are set to try later today but I am afraid to start after only hearing that it must be done when putting the window in....

IMO, having done some of these windows, that would be completely impossible. The window needs to come out.

You must remove seal, rubber and trim as a whole or will be impossible to insert the trim after window has being installed.
Removing rear window can be done by gentle pushing at corner edges from inside the car.
It will take some time, but window will give...make sure trim is on rubber seal or trim will bent.

NO...do not install new trim with rear window on. You will ruin it. I have tried it and it was impossible for the rubber is pressing on the body inside edge.

Hi all, thanks for the help, I will wait until I am able to find someone competent to pull the window and trim out.... I do not have the time to attempt it myself right now.

Sounds like its going to cost a lot more to change that dumb little trim strip than I imagined, seems like everyone says it is many hours labor to do this, and where I live, that means many $$$

I have the original Porsche targa adjustment manual in PDF. PM me your email and ill email you a copy it may be of some help in this case.
