Sun visor repair

I've got a '68 912 soft window Targa, and although both sun visors are very serviceable, I'd like to somehow refresh them. It seems to me that a number of years ago someone posted a thread that talked about using an exacto (or razor) blade and opening the visor up along its edge, then replacing the innards with, I don't remember what, and then using, I believe super glue, to carefully close the slit. Does anyone remember the article, or better yet, have an alternative solution.

Thanks,

JJ

It could have been me. I tried something along those lines, but the result was not satisfactory. Now, I got rid of the sunvisors and always have a pair of sunglasses in the car !

Here is the thread: Rebuilding a sunvisor

I recently did a DIY repair on the visors that's documented on another site, here's the link

http://www.impactbumpers.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=10996

You might have to register to see it, but like Pelican it's a free site and it's a good group.

Good luck.

i filled one of mine with that expanding foam. i let it sit for several days and it did not dry. i had a book on top of it to keep the flat shape. i took the book off because i thought it did not work, then one spot expanded like a mountain and the stuff dried. my brother gives me a hard time about every time he gets in the car. oh well. good idea, just bad execution.

The best 74 dollars I have ever spent on my 911.

http://www.autosunvisors.com/

My targa visors were puffy and nasty. This company uses the original visor frames and rebuilds them. Very cheap considering what you get in return.

Did they use the original vinyl and restore the original mirror?

Oh, man! I'm all over this Vinyl Specialties deal. Looks to me like the right result for the right price.

Check my solution on an earlier post about sun visors. Total cost, about $30.00 on new VW units, both sides beige.

Vinyl specialty does beautiful work and you can not beat the price but on mine they changed the configuration just enough so it pops out of the clamp when I swing the visor down. Not a big deal just that some of the function was lost. Maybe I'm just lucky

Ditto on the Vinyl Specialties sunvisors. I have the same problem however with the visor popping out of the clip when they are pulled down. Looks like the little silver tab sticks out a little bit too much. Thinking about making a spacer for the body clip to provide clearance. Won't have to be very thick. I'll put it on the "to do" list!!!!

VW sunvisors

Balleta, can you provide more specific information?
Where did you get them, for what year, model VW, etc?

Thanks.

Ever notice that if the part isn't referenced in the computer by Make and Model Year the part is not available?

I searched the online VW sites using 113 898 550 H and didn't find anything.....every site asks for a make and model year....simply searching for "sunvisors" got zip. Guess they are called something else....WTF.

Here's the other thread....he lists a part# and the pic. Sun Visors for the 911

purchased them here in PR but they are available worldwide. I found them through Google in OE Vee Dub in Colorado(Item 21-2121) (oeveedub.com) for around $28.00 both. Also found another place, M & T Manufacturing - Selling volkswagen parts for more than 30 years that has different models of visors, both in black and off-white.
As I said, it is easy to do, cheap and looks really good.
There are some more pictures of the finished job in the thread mentioned by Joe Bob.

Getting any of the VW parts people to answer the phone let alone a question has been problematic.

First off, I have a cab. The cab visors don't swivel to the doors like the coupes. Pelican wants close to $200 a side. If I can find a bug/bus repalcement with the correct measuremnt, I can swap the swivel for my striaght pin.

The critical measurement is across the top, pin to pin. The one VW guy I was able to get to measure that came back with 16 inches.....not good.

My visors on my 78 Targa were in deplorable condition - brittle from age. What I ended up doing was making new ones.

I removed both visors and took the material off the frame. I picked up some scrap pieces of carpet foam and and from the fabric store black vynil with cloth backing. I wrapped the foam around the frame making sure I had the correct contour and glued it to the frame.

I then laid the frame over the vinyl with the black side facing up and cut the vynil allowing extra for sewing. I then placed another piece of vinyl over the top of the frame with the black side facing down. In other words, the cover was inside out.

I then pinned along the edges and sewed the vynil allowing enough of an opening to insert the frame with the vynil turned out. I sewed the remaining by tucking the material in and stitching it on the side closest to the window. They came out great.
