Power Window Mystery solved
 

Hello

I am helping out a friend with this 87 930. Really nice low mile car. It has one of those overly complex alarm systems in it that controlled the power windows, sunroof, you name it, millions of aftermarket relays and miles of speaker wire.

As with most of those alarm systems it met its demise by the alarm relay control box catching fire. After that power windows, sunroof inoperable and the door buzzer never goes off.

I have being pulling all the alarm parts out and repairing the harness. Now I have power and things are starting to work. passenger side window works like a champ. I can hear the driver side motor faintly try but goes nowhere.

I ran direct power to the motor, no luck. So I figure maybe the motor got fried in the Alarm fiasco. I loosen the window regulator. I am having a hell of a time getting the regulator into a position where I can pull the motor off since the regulator is stuck in the window up position.

After struggling for 10 min I hear a clunk as something drops into the door channel. Hmm I fish it out

Looks pretty beat up whatever it is. I wonder....

I apply power to window motor and wallah! it works. So this thingie was jammed in the regulator.

Question is what is it? Is it part of the regulator?

the regulator arm center pivot. the window probably won't work too well without it. available as a repair part.

Okay I see the pivot repair units on the Pelican site. Question is are these worth it or are you better or with a complete new regulator. Having this car correct is more important than pure cost to the owner.

That is the part the holds one end of the spring.
In mine I found it was very soft metal...allowing lots of wear.
I replaced it with much harder steel parts (made by me) and drilled and tapped to accept a bolt from behind.
Works like a charm....and I will never have to look at it again (did both doors).

Okay got the regulator out without removing the window frame, that was a lot of fun. The manuals I read said you had to remove the window frame but I really did not want to disturb it in this car.

If you remove the motor/gearbox while the regulator is in the windows you can then weasel out the regulator without removing the window frame. Not easy but it can be done.

So check out the picture below, does the loose part hold the spring in the area indicated, almost seems silly as the spring is being held fine right now, maybe with a little less tension.

Or is this a left over part from a previous failed regulator?

THANK YOU for posting this! I tore into my passenger door this weekend, and found that exact same piece banging around in the bottom of the door shell. I meant to post about it, but dun fergot.

Strange, my windows both work great (very fast, very stable, no problems). I wonder too if someone already replaced the pivot, and left the broken piece in there.

I have just read the millions of threads on this issue. There is some confusion about this broken part versus the center pivot unit that you can buy the weltmeister replacement for.

This is a late 87 911 so the center pivot (center of the spring) is steel already. The broken piece in my case is soft metal and retains the outer end of the spring. You can see the spring has unwound about 1/3 of a turn and stopped against one of the regulator mounts.

In my case the broken spring end retainer had jammed the regulator. I imagine the window will be slightly slower and put more load on the motor/electrical.

So it looks to me like the Weltmeister part probably wont fix this issue.

I found one other thread where the Pelican had made a retainer at home using a t-nut and a bracket. I will probably weld a new spring retainer on the regulator to retain the the full spring tension.

power window regulator what years will inter change?
 

I need a left side power window regulator for my 1993 911 (964) cabriolet. Does any one know what years with interchange with my unit? Will earlier year models work as well?

people keep calling it the center pivot in the spring....drives me nuts. as you can see it is not the center pivot but the one that holds the spring tight. easy fix. you can buy a threaded piece of stock from ace hardware and it goes right in place of the old. use permanent lock tite... lots of threads on this.

Why yes, yes it does. Is more better ? I don't know. As long as the tracks aren't gummed up, I think the window should slide and work OK.

I have the same situation. I heard a loud pop one day while rolling up the window.
Odd thing is, the window still works perfectly fine.
I am guessing the spring is now just secured by that screw hole thing in the photo.
Unintentional failover?
