shortstroke 3.2l conversion HP values

I have recently done the conversion in my ride. I am wondering if anyone has values for HP after doing this.

specs:
original 3.0l Non a euro with CIS

new 3.2 P&C with J&E 9.5:1 compression with CIS
964 cam grind
ssi's
single outlet exhaust sport muffler not sure of make

I am curious of what kind of HP I have now but will not be spending money on a dyon to find out. Can anyone get me in the ballpark?

220-240 fwhp with Porsche sized german horses.

200 - 220 rwhp on most dynos.

Add carbs and at 10+ hp and much faster throtle response.

That is my guess.

my guess = 1.2 * original hp (since you incr. displ. by that much)

then add a tad for the 964 cams IFF you have better low in & out

add a dollop for the CR incr.

you are done

I got 229 RWHP with 964 cams, Carrera intake/heads, Megasquirt EFI, EDIS twin plug ignition, and SSI's.

Bruce has an estimate of the Hp after a similar mod in his book. Think it was around the 230 mark.

I actually have a set up like this for sale. Set of 98mm pistons and cylinders (all Mahle) for a short stroke 3.2.

Thanks

Ed

Pulled out my old Bruce Anderson book on modifing Porsches. The 3.2 kit was popular at one time. Kremer & Max Horitz and other tuners used to do it a bunch in europe. Per his book this mod was good for 220hp. (German Hourses.)

Cam and sport exaust should help.

Quality port work can make a solid differance to. Expecially on the small port heads. If it has stock small ports on a 3.2ss it would choke the motor and all bets are off. :)

port size

I believe that the 79 SC motor still had the large ports, correct?

Yes.

As someone getting ready to time the cams on my 3.2SS, i know how much $$ u prolly just spent. But i am just curious as to why you wouldnt want to spend the drop-in-the-bucket $100 or so for a couple of dyno pulls? Aren't you just a little curious as to what it ACTUALLY makes, not to mention what your torque curve is, AFR's and other cool stuff? I know i sure as hell am, and will be doing so as soon as motor is broken in.

There are slowly becoming enough 3.2SS on this board that it would be cool to start compiling a database with everyone's build specs, and how these specs translate into real-world (ie hard, cold dyno data vs BB BS'ing and seat-of-pants blah, blah) data. For instance, the build specs for my motor are JE 9.8:1 pistons, large port single plug heads with stock large port intake, MS wide band O2 EFI, SSI's, DC40 Mod S cams. Would be cool to see how a dyno log of my motor compares to yours and other SS guys. Does going with EFI give any advantage over CIS? What do the different cam profiles (964/C2/DC40, etc) look like in the 3.2SS. U get the picture. Present and future Pelicans who want to build the 3.2SS, which is a dynamite motor, could so make better choices in doing their build.

dyno runs

I am not even sure if there is a dyno anywhere near me to be honest. If it was only a hundred dollars or so and I did not have to drive to Chicago or the Cities to get on one I may just do it. The way I look at it, not knowing is saving me money!!!!:)

juicersr 04-14-2009 06:30 PM

I gotcha, in the booneys huh? :(

If u have access to an iphone, there is an application called 'dynolicious' that will allow give u a fairly accurate estimation of HP based on weight and acceleration times. Take a look at this thread if interested. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/448785-iphone-dyno-results-thread.html?highlight=dynolicious

Better than nothing if you want a good estimation and entertaining if nothing else.

RWebb 04-14-2009 06:32 PM

a road dyno won't give a very accurate measurement of hp anyway

West Bend dynop tuning. (30 min. away from Fon Du Lac.) Borchardt Speed in West Allis (45 min. away from you) all out of excuses now. Borchardt has a Dyno day where you get a few pulls for under a hundred bucks. Fun road trip. Fun day of cars and power. See you there.SmileWavy

I am not an expert but I believe a SS 3.2's is a great motor and one of the sweet spots in 911 motor architecture. Add carbs, MFI or ITBs/EFI and a cam that is a bit more aggressive than an S and they can be so sweet. Think 2.4S or 2.7RS but bigger. No issue with rod bolts or spinning them up to 73-7500rpm.

A thought on the big port heads. They used to be thought of as not being very good. They are better for higher rpm hp than small port heads but a set of small port heads ported by someone in the know should be a nice improvement. :)

Power increase due to displacement is 3.2 over 3.0, not 1.2 times.

dyno

Tony I guess you got me there. I was not aware of there being a dyno in the area. That sound like it may be fun.

Don't forget the compression bump and the sport exhaust. :)

I think the foregoing posts addressed other potential gains....

Knowing your AFR-curve could save you a whole lot of money too!

- That's right - I made a mistake. The displ. incr. alone will indeed be (to a first approximation - which ignores frictional losses) 3.2/3, = 1.07%.
