Axle Orientation
I tried a search, but could not find the answer I'm looking for.
When replacing CV joints (or whatever might cause one to remove the axle) does it matter which end goes in/out? There is a splotch of paint on my axles and I'm wondering if that is a mark for orientation. I know there's an orientation for the CVs themselves, but not sure about the axle. Thanks!

If the CV's are identical on each end, I don't think it makes any diff which way you put them. Torsion bars, while they look similar, are another deal altogether.

I've swapped axles around on a 944 in the past. As long as the axle type is the kind with the same CV configuration on both ends, it's fine.

The axle shaft experiences torque for many years in the same direction and I would keep that same rotation by marking the axles before removing. Unlike Carrera, SC-CV's can be switched on the shafts (maintaining the same rotation) to get a new running-surface in the races for the balls. That's what I did when checking the CV's couple years ago. ![]()

I agree with Gunter. I was told you can switch them from side to side, but reverse the inside to the outside so the axle itself is still "twisting" in the same direction. I hope that makes sense. You can reverse the CV joints too to change the "wear side". it's Friday and this probably doesn't make any sense.
