My First 911

i have just been given a 1974 911 by my father. It has not been started in 7 years. Is there any type of "checklist" out there to go thru to check the basics before trying to start it. I am a newbie to the Porsche world and want to do things right and get it running. any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

jim

Jim,

First - WOW - and congrats!! Do a search on this board, or wait a few more minutes and I am sure you will get some good answers. It may take awhile, and the effort may be extensive based on how the car was stored, so get ready to answer some questions about the fuel tank (dry or not), and whether the car was prepared for long term storage (battery removed, etc).

Can you send more pics while we wait (is that being selfish?)

Welcome and us this occasion to learn to use the search button. This topic has been covered many times, so you should be able to find tons of info. What other info about the car do you have? We're always curious about old cars that have been setting for a long time.

I think I would wash it first......Change all the fluids drain the gas out replace with fresh gas pull the injectors and clean them, then run a lot of injector cleaner through the system first few tankfuls. welcome to the club

kept under carport

the car was parked after a "fuel pump" problem was detected. it was not touched since then. the nice weather in florida helped keep it in somewhat nice condition. it has a little rust. i have removed the fuel pump. the fuel pump "spins" but does not pump. i am gonna drain fuel tank, change all fluids and following some of the "checklists" i have found for starting after long storage try to see if it will start.

question for anyone. this may be a dumb question but i will ask anyway. after taking out fuel pump i took top off and "bumped" it with 12v. the pump spins. i put top back on. then i put hose on intake to see if it would "pump" gas. nothing happened. it would not pump. pump gets warm so i stopped. i can fill pump up with gas and it will run thru with outlet fitting taken off. if i take outlet fitting off it will not pump out either. i guess i have a bad fuel pump ?

Gravity gets the fuel to the pump, the pump then "pushes" the fuel to the engine side. The fuel lubricates the pump and keeps it cool.

I don't think the pump "sucks the gas from the tank " like when you think of a sump pump.

I beleive it just "pushes"?? if that is any help to you in your diagnosis.

While your in there, check all your fuel lines for any signs of deterioration. Once you et it running, pay attention catch a leak under pressure.

BTW - congrats and some extra items.

go through a major maintenance interval on it - say the 60,000mi service.

- fluid changes
- brake fluid (7 yrs is a long time)
- brake operation, don't be surprise if you find a frozen caliper.
- clutch adjustment
- new spark plugs (or clean and gap the ones you have for now)
- valve adjustment check
- TIRES, check the condition before you put any real miles or higher speeds on it. If you can get it running, then its worth buying a new set, even if its not the latest and greatest

Congrats, Jim! FYI the 1974 Porsche 911 is somewhat unique in that a) it's the first "impact bumper" car and b) it's the only year in the US that used narrower rear bumper pads. All years after went to a "fat" rear bumper pad. Most people like the narrower look.

I love that your car is spoilerless! In fact it's a look I'm taking mind (back) to myself. I would only suggest adding H4 headlights to clean up the nose a bit. But that's down the road for sure...when you start to pull it together aesthetically.

Cheers and enjoy that cool car!
