Clutch pedal hit bottom

I have a '78 SC. Engine was rebuilt in '04, including new clutch, and has probably 25,000 miles, give or take. The pedal cluster was rebuilt probably 30,000 ago. It has a new clutch helper spring properly installed last month. The other day, the clutch pedal went to the floor. I thought perhaps the cable had broken, or had come unconnected from the release lever. However, it hadn't. The helper spring was completely disengaged. I pushed the release arm back into tension, and the spring came around to where it ought to be in relation to the heat exchanger cutout, but there was an inch between the adjusting bolt and the positioning lever. I might add that the end of the cross shaft and the positioning lever have marks that I assume should line up?

I removed the lever and shifted it one spline toward the adjustment screw/release arm, but I found it necessary to back the adjustment screw way off, until very little was showing. The helper spring stayed mostly in place, but will not return to fully engaged, and the clutch is very stiff.

I haven't heard any noise, squealing, etc. to lead me to think that the throw out bearing was dgoing, but the cross shaft seems very stiff to me...should I be able to rotate it by hand?

Any suggestions? I can drop the engine (just had it out last month) but I'm not anxious to. Thanks.

I had a similar problem with my 82, turned out the throw out arm was cracked, each time I pressed the clutch pedal, the crack would grow.

good luck

My car did the same thing last summer, it was the clutch fork. It broke. Easy repair but dropping the tranny is a thing you don't want to be doing in the middle of summer. you want to be driving that car. LOL

when you say roll pin, are you referring to the pedal cluster?
