Question about early Distributors

Hello All,

I have 2 Bosch Distributors that have the same part numbers but are not exactly the same. The spindle on one is smaller on one of them. The one on the left was on a 1970 911 2.2T engine. I am presuming the other is for an later model.

Can anyone tell me the exact differences?

The part number is 0 231 184 001

Thanks,

Brent

Bump...Anyone?!

Hi Brent,

They both started life as identical distributors. At some point the one on the left was modified for an early 2.0/2.2 case by removing the mount and turning down the shaft. Since the early 2.0/2.2 Bosch distributors are hard to find this is a good alternative.

Let me know if you decide to sell the one on the left... It would make a cheaper spare for the 71T.

Cheers, John

Hey John,

Thanks for the info...I could not recall the details as to why the one on the left was hard to find and it was expensive. Yes - I do plan on selling. PM me with what it is worth to you.

Thanks,

Brent

That's actually a good photo for the archives showing how to cut off the timing sector (the technical name for the part of the casting that engages the stud in the case) and turn down the shaft to adapt a current production distributor to an early car. Of course you need an early distributor clamp such as the one shown.
