Deves rings, how long did it take them to seat?

500 miles so far and the motor still puffs at idle and take off. Anyone else here used Deves rings? I thought they would seat pretty quick....

Not a good sign. What oil are you using?

Using kendall 20w50 people suggested both deves as well as goetze. thing is I rebuilt with J&E pistons and Goetze didnt have the right size. It seems like maybe a few have seated because the amount of smoke has been slowly reducing but after 500 I thought for sure everything should be good...

I think you should have started with straight 30 weight and run it hard right away.

I agree with what this guy promotes...

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I'd switch to 30 weight for 500-1000 miles and run the snot out of it. May not work, but it will be fun.

From John's previous post I would guess they didn't seat...

Steve W also refuses to use them. I used to run them in Italian cast iron blocks, and it was really important to run the engines hard from the get-go. They are extremely hard rings, and they have an unusual construction that may not be good at controlling oil migration. This would not be a problem with vertical bores that have a hard time staying lubed, but might imply that they are a bad design for a horizontal cylinder with oil constantly splashing around.

I think you are past that point of break in now, and from what has been said around the block, I'm not sure that would make a difference. There is a seriously good thread over in engine building about breaking in rings BTW. You should read it, and go to all the links, but it won't make you any happier.

There is at least one thread about this over on Rennlist. Good luck.
