large Durant mirror - repro or original?

Are all the new ones that various vendors have available reproductions?

Is there any way to tell the difference?

How long have the originals been out of production?

And, does it matter?

Hi,

I just recently bought a repro durant, but ended up taking my old original lens house & foot and only used the other parts (mirror, etc) from the repro.

Reason is that the repro does not have the star emblem & made in germany text on it, but the most important part is that the bolts in the repro piece does not have the same dimensions as the original. The space between them is larger and required me to drill another hole in my door.

Last, the foot of the repro piece is bulkier than the original.

So, if you had an original, best is to buy a original back. But looking at the price difference, perhaps another hole is not a bad option...... I was just lucky that the main pieces of mine were ok.

Hope this helps..

Does this one look correct? I purchased this mirror years ago with the understanding that it was an authentic Durant. I recently sold my car and never got around to installing it. I intend to put this mirror up for sale.

Last I looked, Pelican has both in the catalog, but shows no stock for the OEM. I had a bad experience with the repros, but not from Pelican. I think at the time, they didn't have any. I sent them back to the retailer that sold them. The range of adjustment was not acceptable.

Brent,

That looks to be an OEM mirror, though I haven't seen a repro to compare the logo. I don't think they'd counterfeit that.

That's a repro looking at the foot. Original is more square & narrow. To be sure, check the back and see if the bolts line up with your door holes.

Further research and I now agree with hessel1974, that looks to be a repro. An OEM logo has more distinct stars with sharper points (picture below of an OEM mirror):

Also, an OEM mirror has a fixed rear stud and a moveable front bolt. The one in the first post looks to have two fixed studs.

Thanks for the input guys. I have just discovered the follow up posts on this thread and will be asking $55 for this reproduction mirror.
