Yes, it is pretty easy to convert. Much harder to convert back to sporto. Sportos are pretty rare and I would keep it as is, personally.

You need the complete pedal assembly and shifter from a donor and a good 915 gearbox, so its hardly a snap. That's a few thousand right there unless you have the parts already and the ability to do it yourself.
If it works, keep it as is. They are good fun in 4 speed form and a rare bit of Porsche engineering. See my site Sportomatic.org and there's plenty of help here to troubleshoot any problems you have. |

if you have never driven a sporto i would suggest driving it and seeing how you like it. if you are wanting to use a clutch i would suggest buying a 5spd car and leaving the sporto alone. i can say that they are fun to drive and will only go up in value due to the many that have been converted to 5spd and the few produced. but if you decide to convert it i would suggest hanging onto all the sporto parts and keeping them for a future owner that may want to convert it back. on another note if you really didn't care much about the car ever being original again you could probably sell off the sporto bits to fund most of the conversion if you do all the work yourself. but no matter what you decide welcome to the forum and hope you find the car that works for you. cheers ed
