993 vs 3.2 carrera valve guides, engine gurus advise please??
 

I have a 1985 carrera with 172k on the clock, valve guides are fine heads never off burns a quart every 1,500 miles. I am looking at a well maintained 1995 993 with 78K with records PPI will not show valve guide wear, Is the 993 as good as the 3.2 as far as the valve guides go or did they have trouble, thanks JL

I think your 3.2 is in the minority. To the best of my knowledge the 993 is coming up on the range when cars start needing guides. My completely unscientific research says 60-120K is the average.

It's a crap shoot. Some 993's need a valve job @30 - 70K miles, some way past that. My 97 had a top end @ 35K for valve guides.

993 valve guides are worse than 3.2 valve guides
 

Your experience with valve guides is extremely unusual. My well cared for 87 Carrera 3.2L needed valve guides at 70K miles. I put in a 1995 3.6L motor in my car which had already had a top end rebuild due to bad valve guides at 42K. Of course, my buddy will tell you his 1988 Carrera valve guides are fine at 128K. But, he hesitates to tell you he burns a quart of oil every 400 miles.
