rennline magnetic track matt set paint protection??

has anyone used these. I have a pristine carrera, I dont like vinyl or clear bras, I am concerned about chips but also about scratching the paint when installing and removing this product. I don drive on the track but want to use for out of town open road. thanks JL

I tried the magnetic track mat a few years ago (not the one Rennline sells) and it left surface scratches in the paint. I have dark blue paint that shows scratches the way black does, so the marks were very apparent. I'm now using a regular, run-of-the-mill bra for long drives and track days.

You're really best with the clear bra material, either 3M or Ventureshield. They are not a vinyl, but a 8 mil stretchable urethane that is virtually invisible installed properly. Every other removable material can shift and vibrate and leave surface scratches on your paint.

The other option is what I learned from another owner at the autocrosses/track events, which is to use clear shelf liner contact paper, or it's actually some kind of clear vinyl. That stuff is cheap, like $6 for a 18" by 25 foot roll! Home Depot, Lowes, Target they all sell the stuff under Con-Tact brand. Better looking than using blue painters tape, and you wrap up whatever you want to protect, and peel it off and throw it away when your done. We wrap our front ends and the clear bra material on our cars just to keep them from getting scuffed or nicked. Sounds like for a temp out of town trip, this could be a good option for you.

Steve,

Do you know if this material will conform to ins and outs of the fenders?

It has about as much stretch as 3-4 mil plastic or vinyl would have. You can try to stretch it to conform to mild compound curves, but this stuff is cheap and is not something you want to use as a permanent basis - I don't think it's worth the trouble. The adhesive is just a mild tack material, slightly less tack than the adhesive used on removable painter's masking tape. I suppose if you spend the time to put it on like a clear bra install, it's pretty invisible from 20'.

I use it on some interior plastic parts that easily get scuffed like door sill scuff plates. It has a matt/eggshell finish so it kind of matches the matt/textured finish of interior plastics.

Temporary mask...

Steve,

I was only thinking of using it as a temporary mask since I've been asked several times at the track if I had "stock" in 3M, see pix...
