78 SC Clutch problem. Dead pedal!!!

Facts:
78 915 box who had a makeover in 2004.
New clutch 2004.
Not sure about the clutch cable.

Problem:
The clutch pedal is "dead" the first 1/3 of its travel.
It will not go back into alignment with the brake pedal unless i pull it back.
If i let it go it goes back to 1/3 position.
Can not depress the clutch long enough to put the car in 1st or rew.
If i remove the footrest/board i can depress the pedal enough to have a smooth shift.
Engages 1st and rew just fine.

Findings:
The clutch cable clevis looks to be screwed long into the cable shoving only 10mm/0.2 inch of tread left from fully screwed in. So this end looks ok.

Cable seems to run free.

Cluster bushings seems ok.

Omega spring and the smaller helper spring looks ok.

When looking at the large release arm and the smaller actuating lever arm there is a gap of 1.0 - 1.2 mm.
When i pull back the pedal i can see that the cable runs back about 4mm.
The cable adjustment under the transmition is screwed out as long as the treads goes.

Tried to use a small crowbar and force to pull back the long lever arm but i could not move it.

So......
As stated i have not removed or replaced the wire.
But the rest seems to be ok apart from the clutch pedal that stands 1/3 down.

Any advice anyone?
Both stretched or broken cable has been mentioned.
Some talk about broken fork/arm inside the gearbox.

Thanks in advance from Norway

Try checking to see if the roll pin that attaches the clutch pedal arm to the armature running through the pedal cluster has sheared off. I have had this happen on 2 914 clusters and my 911SC cluster.

My solution was to drill the hole slightly larger and insert a 1/4" shoulder bolt with a Nylock nut. No problems since.

The symptoms you have sound like what I experienced. The clutch pedal is just rotating on the armature instead of rotating it forward and pulling on the clutch cable.

Good luck, Cooper

I second the roll pin. Mine broke this past weekend at a DE event. Before it broke shifting was difficult and the clutch pedal was lower than normal.
