just trying to educate myself
 

i have been reading almost every post just to learn more about my new passion. i read alot about the early 911 cars and what you can tell from the vin. how do i tell for sure what i have. the vin is 9114100970 and the engine is stamped 6141695. all i know is that it is a 1974 911 base model. this site has proven to have the best members of any site i have been to. everyone is very willing to help and quick to give opinions. thanks to everyone who has helped so far. hopefully someday i can return the favor.

Welcome, I read your introdution post you luck guy. The charts I have for the VIN and engine numbers you might have to save them and zoom in to read them? It looks like your car is #970 but I am no expert by any means. 1974 is on page 3.

The Porsche 911 RED BOOK ('65-'99) is a very handy reference booklet. Based from the information you submitted, here is the description I found:
The '74-'77 (911) used a 10 digit identification. First 3 digits 911 (car model), 4th digit (year), 5th digit (engine description: 1=911, 3=911S, 4=Carrera US, 6=Carrera), 6th digit (body style: 0=coupe, 1=targa), last 4 digits (production series).

Your car was produced in the G series (August 1973 to July 19740) production. The engine is a type 911/12:
90 mm bore x 70.4 mm sroke
2,687 cc engine (2.7 liter)
8.0:1 compression ratio
