Wow, a lot of hammering and bending going on.

These look like long hoods? Until what year was assembly mostly by hand like this?

I would think that it was more or less like this up until the introduction of the 964.

Wow! What a cool set of videos. I thought that one of the cars might have been mine since they're obviously '73 2.4L cars, but then I saw the CIS engine being installed. Oh well. Still cool.

It's always cool to see cars built by hand; although I have to laugh about them saying each car is a little different. Imagine being the guy who got the car everyone worked on when they were having a bad day...

I wonder what all that grinding did to the galvanizing on the Thyssen steel...

No galvanized steel in the early chassis as shown. The metalcrafters were free to "hammer to shape, file to fit and paint to match" with some lead work in-between.

No the later longhoods had some galvanizing. To answer the original posters question: the galvanizing goes byebye!
