Fuel Sender Question

72 2.7 RS, Webers, SSI's, rebuilt 915 with LSD

I was having an issue with my Fuel gauge not registering full when I filled up. I had all my gauges restored by North Hollywood so I decided that maybe the sender was bad. I took it out and and did an inspection but just decided to get a new one. So the new one has solved the full issue but now I have a new problem. When I had the sender out I decided to check to see if the low fuel light would come on if the tank was low and it does not turn the light on. My bulb is new and the socket is clean so I was wondering if anything else could be the cause? ALl other lights and guages and electrical things work so I did not find a fuse. I do not think the light has ever came on to be honest.

When you tested the new sender to see if the low level light worked, was the sender body grounded to the chassis or tank? If so, then your next step is to see if you have continuity in the black wire from the sender to the gauge light by using a multimeter.

If the black wire has continuity, check to see if you get a reading to ground through the black wire (again, be sure the sender is grounded to the chassis.) If you get a ground reading when the float sender is bottomed out, you may need to check if there is power to the bulb itself. According to the diagrams, the bulb is powered by a connection to the oil level gauge. Use your multimeter and check for continuity between the power terminal on the oil level gauge and the power terminal for the bulb.

Thanks a million. I did not have the sender grounded! duh! I will start there and then do the other tests.

Don't feel bad, we've all been there.

BTW, an easy way to see if your bulb circuit works is to unplug the harness from the sender and push the bare end of a jumper wire into the socket for the black wire, then ground the other end of the jumper wire. Turn on the ignition and the light should go on.
