Koni strut insert part numbers
 

Looking to get koni front inserts for my 72 with boge struts. Pelican has part number: 86-1647 and this looks like a hydraulic shock and adjustable, but is it adjustable from the outside, top mount??? Then there is this part number: 8641-1039 which I found via a post from Warren (see below) which looks like it’s a gas shock and is externally adjustable? These are no longer available through pelican??? But other vendors have them. What's also interesting is that these are stated for later years on pelican???
I would really like a gas shock, but I’m kind of confused as to what insert to get? Can anyone give any insight into this?

The 86-1647 is the Koni Red. It is adjustable but you need to compress the shock to lock the adjuster plate and then rotate.

The 8641-1039 and 1039 sport are top adjustable using the little plastic knob insert.

I would base the decision on the suspension setup. If stock sized torsion bar I would run the hydraulics. They have a very comfortable ride while having excellent performance.

If you have a stiff torsion bar setup i would go for the 1039 sports.

Thanks for the help, I'm running 22 front and 29 rears torsion bars. So without sounding like a complete idiot, I can purchase the 1039's and they will slide right in? I just think it's interesting that pelican does not offer these anymore and when they did, it was for 74 and later cars? No mention of these being able to fit a 72. I just don't want to purchse from another vendor, they show up, I have my car in pieces and the insert is either to wide, to long, etc....

The inserts will fit. However, there is a change in the gland nut to finish the installation. I would check the Koni-NA site to verify. I know they have a note in their catalog. .

Jason at Paragon Products is the Koni guy. He can make sure you get the correct insert for your strut type.

Alright so after reading a bunch of threads, it seems like a lot of people like bilstein and since they are all gas, it sounds like a good choice. I know bilsteins are a higher pressure 'gas' shock then the koni's, so now the question is, do I get the standard or the sport? I'm thinking standard as some say the sports are pretty harsh?
Can anyone shed some light?

Stock torsion bars, use the standard. Upgraded tosion bars and/or car lowered, use the sports. I've also seen a lot of people use a combination stadard on the front and sport on the rears. I just changed to custom valved Bilsteins from Koni during my coil over conversion on my race car, no experience with off the shelf standard or sport shocks. I ran my Koni sports for a long time and really liked them.
