915 - removing short shift kit

when i purchased my 74 Euro Carrera 2.7L, it came fitted with a short shift kit. the transmission was fully rebuilt by a reputable porsche independent shop.

however, i have not been 100% satisfied with the feel of shifting. for example, i must always slide it into 2nd before going into first in order to prevent crunching, shifting from 2nd to 3rd can be at times be difficult, 2 or 3 attempts may be required to get it into 3rd, and so forth.

some people have suggested that i remove the short shift kit and this will improve it.
if i wanted to go back to the original set up (ie long throw), what parts are needed and where can i purchase them?

what about a 915 wevo classic shifter? will this improve the feel of my shifts?

thoughts and comments welcome

thanks

I'd realign the shift coupler before blaming it on the short shift kit and see if that fixes some of your issues with not being able to shift into the gears.

A Wevo classic shifter is a short shift kit.

short shifts suck. just find a complete used shifter unit and bolt it on.

Adjust the clutch, too. Do what is called a basic adjustment, as opposed to just checking the clearance at the lever. You can search this forum for the details or look in the Pelican technical articles section. If you buy a complete shifter, get one out of a '77 to '84 model car.

I have the same deal. luckily I saved the old shifter though the knob is stuck on the factory short shifter so I have more of an issue then I like

the factory short shift is great. adjust clutch then readjust linkage. if you have weltmeister kit replace with factory kit

Pelican used parts classified ad forum.
Porsche salvage yards.
PCA Panorama classified ads.

Some parts are available new but complete assemblies were never sold.

The parts can be ordered from Porsche. However, individual parts are more costly than a complete kit. Also available from our host; also available new and used here and on eBay.

If your tranny has been truly fully rebuilt by a reputable shop I would ask if they have replaced syhncros etc

however, i have not been 100% satisfied with the feel of shifting. for example, i must always slide it into 2nd before going into first in order to prevent crunching, shifting from 2nd to 3rd can be at times be difficult, 2 or 3 attempts may be required to get it into 3rd, and so forth.

I think you will find a lot of 915 gearboxes suffer this issue with first. I reckon you need to pull the plate in the back middle on the floor in front of the rear seats and adjust the linkage and check your bushings.

Dont think so....
