82 911 clutch problems

I have tried a search but there is so much to read thru and I'm in a time bind here.
My SC has developed a odd occurrence with the clutch. 28 times out of 30 the clutch pedal works fine and travels all the way down to it's stop. 2 out of 30 it only travels about an inch and a half and stops. I checked the pedal box and there are no obstructions.
I'm going to have the chance to get the car up on a lift tomorrow and I don't have any time before to check things out.
What should I be looking for? The clutch works fine and even works when the pedal only travels the shorter distance. Anyone have this problem? Do you think it's the cable binding on something.
My garage is currently full with my Mustang project so I would like some help in things to check when I've got the car on the lift. I am only going to get a few hours on the lift and I've got a spare clutch cable but I don't want to just start replacing things if it doesn't solve the problem
Thanks for any pointers

Steve

Read that. It will give you an idea of what the moving parts are and what to look at to compare. FYI there is a Tech Articles section which is very helpful with good photos.
If it isn't the pedal box, the cable, helper spring or the casting for the cable anchor, then it could be inside the clutch housing.

I had a the same problem on my 81 and I followed the tech article as well but still had repeat
problems...long story short I replaced the pedal bushings and clutch helper spring and the problems went away...2 years now.

When I purchased the cable however it measured the same length but the plastic sheath was shorter than original so I asked the trusty mech if this made a difference and he said that sometimes this causes binding.

I opted for one that matched perfectly.
