Door hinges base plate question.

After a complete re-spray I'm having trouble adjusting the doors with the new rubbers. Can somebody tell me how many hinge base plates are needed per hinge? Is this different on every car?

My limited experience, with three different year cars, was there was one shim under each hinge. However, I would suspect that you will find a variety of answers. On one car I fabbed a second shim to align the door gaps but aligning the door is also done with a single jack and a block of wood, if you read the Porsche books. Bottom line, I'd say there is no fixed rule but I'd defer to any body/paint experts.

Tx for the reply.
Any more body/paint experts out there?

It is a shim. You have to use them to fit the door to the car. Start with one and go from there.

According to the shop manual, you use as many as it takes to align the door.

Within reason of course.

And you may need shims for the latch as well. They are frequently available on ebay.

And the 'special' triple square tool to get the latch bolts out.

Shims are easily made if you need one. Remove one from your hinge and you'll see they are made of thin aluminum. You can by thin sheets of aluminum stock at a hardware store and simply use your old shim as a template.
