Correct motor oil

I know this is the wrong category, but I need a quick answer and there's only two people viewing the 356 forum and almost two hundred here... anyway, I need to know what the best motor oil is to use with my 912. I just finished the rebuild, and I've heard that I'm not supposed to use just regular 30w oil, it has to have zinc or something.. can anyone enlighten me? sorry for the dumb out of place question!

Boy you know how to open up a can of worms.....

The theory goes that oils with more zinc phosphate are good for older engines, I believe Castrol syntec 20W50 has a lot of zinc phosphate in it?

Hey tb,

No worries, friend. No such thing as a dumb question. Especially when it comes to something as important as oil.

I'm no expert in the matter, but I share your concern on ZDDP levels in oil. From what I've found doing searches, it seems Brad Penn is the one of the better oils to go with. But you'll find that you will have to order it from specialty suppliers. Not sure if our host carries it.

Just today I found another manufacturer that claims to have pretty high Zn and P levels. Company name is CenPeCo (Central Petroleum Company) and I had never heard of them.

I found that 20w50 Castrol GTX High Mileage has a fair amount of ZDDP additives and just purchased some for my baby's next transfusion.

There are many threads in the 911 Tech forums, so take a peek there and get ready to do LOTS of reading.

And by the way, I missed out on getting a cherry '76 912 back in 1990. Can't recall what was wrong with it, but they only wanted 4k for it.

Happy driving!

I think the Castrol Syntec Classic is the one to use.

Any experience and/or proof that Swepco 502 oil improver with any decent dino oil (will lower levels of ZDDP) is just as protective as BP or Swepco oil?

Read over the 'Lubricants" section on Charles' site. I think with your 4 cylinder push rod engine, you might have better luck using 20-50 Harley Davidson air cooled oil as it has a good amount of the zddp as well and is more readily available. Plus, you are not buying 9 or 10 qts at a time like us 911 drivers.

"Let the games begin..."

Why not go to your local WallyMart and pick up a gallon jug of Shell Rotella T HD 15W-40 oil API Service CJ-4/SM oil for less than $9?

According to the Shell website (www.rotella.com), it typically contains about 1200 ppm zinc and 1100 ppm phosphorous as manufactured. Confirming this, a Blackstone Lab testing of unused Rotella T 15W40 CJ-4 done on 11/08 indicated the following content:
Zinc 1208 PPM
Phosphorus 989 PPM
Calcium 3065 PPM
Boron 35 PPM

In case you haven't viewed it yet, this is the thread that you will eventually be led to. Have a six-pack, a box of wine or a pot of coffee ready when you open it.
