New Wires, New Coil, New Problem
Today I installed new Beru braided ignition wires and a new coil.
I had no reason to install these except for the fact that I had to burn a gift certificate and figured I'd get new wires. The coil was given to me for my birthday b/c I like to have two of everything for my long road trips ![]() Well, after the install everything seemed just dandy. Started like normal. Ran like normal. Idled like normal. Temps fine. Power was good. Then I decided to give it some WOT time. My first stab at the throttle in 2nd gear resulted in some missing/hesitation above 4500 rmps. I believe a couple of tiny backfires (more of a pop pop) were heard as well. I did this a few times with the same result but I never heard another backfire. Just checked the wires and all connections are solid. Checked timing too and it was fine. My plan is to put the old crap back on an test the continuity of the new Beru wires. You all ever had a similar problem with new wires or a new coil? Anything else I should / could check? Am I overlooking something simple?

Open the engine lid and watch it run in the dark so you can if there is arcing. I've had this happen with my braided wires if they crossed routes in certain ways. Typically near the distributor cap since that's where the most overlap occurs. Make sure the wires are grounded properly too. You can also hear arcing if you listen carefully and you don't have a loud motor/exhaust; sounds like a ticking sound.

Just checked and didn't see any arcing. Nothing at all. Pitch black.

sounds like most likely not arcing but did you rev the car to the rpm range you experienced the misfire?

wild guess is it's acting like you have an old tired coil.
in the 1960s if such a thing happened around town going up-hill the dizzy points would be the 1st thing to be changed.

Mexican coil? I'd drop the original coil back in right away...without touching anything else (first).
Best, DOyle

The coil is Bosch - made in Brazil.
I'll swap the old one back on and see what happens. ![]()

You guys were right. It was the new coil.
Initially I thought that the inside contact on the coil was broken. ![]() Upon further examination I found that it wasn't broken. Instead some of the orange plastic must have shaved off when the plug was mated to the coil. ![]() Do you all think that this "shaving" was enough to cause the problem or should I send the coil back? I suppose I could test the new coil again.

The Bosch Brazilian coil is a notorious piece of crap. And expensive. Thought most suppliers had "sold through" and were on to something else. Average lifespan is about ten minutes to three months.

I truly don't understand what this means. Can you enlighten me?
Ok. Good to know. It is going back.

I think what Ron is getting at is that this has been discussed many times several years ago and by searching the archives you will find you are not the first. And now you will become part of the archive.
As you search, you may also find the MSD Blaster coil is the better replacement, depending upon your model year and ignition system. Many smarter than I have opined on the topic. Anyway, it's what I used in my '82 and it has worked fine. If you do go the MSD route, be advised the coil takes an 8MM wire and your cap takes a 7MM wire. The smaller wire will arc in the coil and ruin it. Fab up a wire with different plugs on each end. Good luck. This board is a great resource. |

Not looking good. Called Pelican and they only have the Brazil coils.
Best bet might be to find a good used original GERMAN coil to keep as a spare.

Had the same problem. New coil and wires (Beru) non braided.
Coil was not busted but one of the wires had a small crack in it down by the plug...no visible light show to watch. I found it by trial and error, I played the wire swap game for awhile until I found it. It hd a little char mark on it in a couple of places, I could have damaged it putting it in. I keep 2 spares in the smuggler box.

im using the MSD blaster coil for about 2 years now and have had NO problems. I have one of those brazilian bosch coils, new in the box in my trunk "just in case" but based on what i have read, I would not depend on it for my only coil

Those Beru wires ain't cheap...I would expect nothing less than the highest quality if I chose to purchase them. As it is, I picked the Magnacore instead. No problems yet (knock on wood).
