HELP! Can't figure out how to remove the input shaft seal on a G50 gear box.
|
DO NOT accidently punch it into the case and then have to take it somewhere to have it removed.
Not that I've ever seen that happen. |
I think i just levered mine out carefully although it wasn't as deep as yours. Could you try a seal picker?
A also then tapped the new one in too far and have to take the diff cover plate off to retrieve it which wasn't really too much ball ache. |
This is what it looks like when you pull the diff to retrieve the seal:

Lots of cussing and patience is what you need. I cut a seal puller down so it would fit in the bell housing. That helped some. As I recall, the puller was of limited help. The hooked end was till too big to clear the input shaft. It did get the edge of the seal bent enough that I could get a small screw driver between the case and the seal. Once I could get to the edge, so light chiseling with a hammer and the screwdriver got the seal deformed enough that it came out.
That little seal is a PITA. Heck, it might just be easier to drive it into the case and then remove it from the shaft. Oh, and they all sit that deep. The guide tube has a ridge that goes into the case a bit. |
try screwing in a course thread sheet rock screw and pulling it out with a pair of diagonal cutters.

My friendly neighborhood mechanic was able to fish it out by snagging it with two hefty gauge puller hooks with T-handles. After snagging it and bringing back to the opening, a few sharp yanks and it was out. Nothing like a successful outcome when on the brink of disaster. |
After reading these posts I am really scared. The RMS removal was a lot more than I bargained for. I have the input shaft seal already but have been burned more than once by fixing something that 'wasn't broke'. I may just leave this to a professional and bring them my G-50.

Good news! There is one of these special tools available on eBay for $65. I just might have to pick one up to add to my special tool collection!:D
