Ignition Question

Hi All, I finally got the new 3.0lt engine. Install went without a hitch except I now have no spark. The car runs an after market ignition system that when working performs faultlessly. The new engine has an electronic distributor, green pulse wire with braiding. The old points distributor had a single pulse wire that triggered the ignition.
Question is: what does the green wire and braiding do and what connections need to be made to trigger the ignition.

I don't know, but a few guys here converted their Pcars to aftermarket ignition.
Free bump for ya.

Thanks for the bump...... I found out today that that CDI modules designed to run with points are totally different than those for electronic distributors and are not interchangable. Looks like I will have to fork out for a new ignition system.

Such is life.

Thanks anyway.

I think you should get it to work.

The green wire carries the pulse from the distributor to the CDI box to trigger a spark.

Can you explain how your aftermarket ignition system works? I see you have a 3 connector CDI plug; how is that on a 3.0 engine? Didn't they use a 6 connector CDI?

The car was originally fitted with a 2.7 and 3 pin CDI thus the wiring, the previous owner fitted a 3.0 engine and run a modified 2.7 distributor wich used points and the original 2.7 engine harness. A bit of a mess really, anyway I have fitted a new 3.0 engine with the correct wiring and dizzy. The aftermarket CDI is designed to run with points and the electronic dizzy does not have the direct grounding needed to fire it.

This is what I will be fitting at this stage

just a thought. what about using the 6 pin CD? or better yet, go to the MSD box. its cheaper

briancoates 05-14-2009 04:00 AM

When I purchased the new engine I paid for an original 6 pin CDI and coil although they cannot be supplied. There is apparently no second hand units available in Australia. The M&W unit is less than $500 Aus and the recommended MSD unit is about $1100 Aus. The MSD unit has adjustable ignition cutouts and retard settings for starting etc although those options are not needed. The M&W is much simpler.

Decisions decisions..........................
