fumes in car 911s 2.7 76

Hi guys getting some fumes in the car..not sure where they are coming from

Brief history the car was smoking a bit when parked for a long time but once oil warm not smoke at all acceleration or de acceleration....remember to run it a bit before switching off

But how it was parked made a lot off difference on smoke when starting up

It smoked on start when parked tilted to the left but not to the right in the street cos it`s not a level rd

Now topped up with fresh oil it seems of stopped smoking

But do have some leaks ..but it the smell of fumes I can`t get rid off ..not sure where it`s coming from so any advice helpful to get rid of the fumes

Right just check the car seems to be a lot of oil on the heat exchangers. so it could be drawing the fumes in somewhere.....what does this mean?

If any response pls in layman terms!

Kai

Sounds like you overfilled your oil to me.

At first, I thought your post was about fuel fumes, but now it is obvious it is the burning oil. The cause of the oil may be an overfill as Matthew said so be sure you are checking and adding oil properly (fully warm engine, at idle, level ground, fill only to the half-way point between the marks on the dip stick.) The fumes you smell and can't get rid of will continue as long as oil is deposited on the heat exchangers. No doubt, the fumes are being drawn in by the fan and routed through the heater ducts and some is "leaking" into the cabin. Solve your oil leak, and eventually the fumes will go away.

it is hard to determine exactly what it is without knowing about the car, it sounds like you have oil leaks coming from the engine or oil lines on to your heat exchangers and as soon as they heat up they start burning oil and the smoke could be getting into the cabin easily....
fix the oil leaks and it will solve your problem.
you also said you topped up the oil?
maybe you overfilled it?

Kai1,

Your car is very similar to my 1975. Please follow ossiblue's recommendations - he is right on. What's happening, is that the excess oil is getting blown or sucked out of the oil tank and into the air box right below the air filter. There is a drain at the base of the air box that dumps over the right hand front of the engine, and onto the right heat exchanger. Only fill the oil to half way between the marks. The oil smell won't clear out for a while, so drive with the heater valves off until the air clears (levers between the seats pushed down).

You may have a leak - most common is from the valve covers, especially after a valve adjustment.

Mine is a 75 and had same issue after my first oil change.

In reading MANY posts.. Here is what I discovered

DON'T over fill ... half way (maybe a bit more) on the gauge is where you want the level.
Check at operating temp, after a drive with the engine running or really quickly after shut down.

fumes/leaks

Well I clean the bottom.. seems that a leak is in that area!......not sure if it`s from the oil cooler ....comes in between the 3 pipes of the heat exchangers on to the road 50mm diameter of oil over the wk ...it not a big one.....where should I be looking for the drain?

As mentioned above, there is a hose that connects to the bottom of the air box and runs forward to the top front right side of the engine. There the hose connects to a small plastic tube about 3 inches long that is attached to the engine tin at the front top right of the engine. Mine ends there, and any oil overflow just dumps straight down onto the right side heat exchanger.

To see this you must be looking at the front right part of the engine from underneath. It's up on top and is probably very hard to see with the engine in the car.
