hi, i want to try and see if my engine runs but the engine is currently not in the car. I heard that the engine could be run without it being in the car and so i was wondering what is the best process to get this done\how?

I'm definitely no expert in this matter, but I believe you will need to locate an engine shop (usually a "speed shop") that has what is known as a "bench tester". If you post your location, I'm sure one of the more knowledgeable contributors will tell you exactly what you need and how to go about finding it.
As far as oil...this is a frequent topic of discussion. You'll probably find that contributors will generally be loathe to post their opinions, and will flatly tell you to "do a search". Try a search under "ultimate oil thread", and have a case of beer/box of wine/bag of weed ready because it will read like "War and Peace". On the short end, you will find that most contributors choose Brad Penn, Swepco or Shell Rotella. It's all about the zinc, Baby.
