Perma-tune options.
Hi to everybody.
My name is Felipe and I just bought my first porsche 1977 911s targa with 94.000 miles. stock one owner. I've been doing a few things just by reading this forum.( so helpful) I have a problem. Permatune box is not working (tested) What would you recommend: Repair existing permatune. Find used one Replace with a Bosch. Go MSD I appreciate every answer. Thanks again |

MSD
you will find the majority do not like permatune. it is probably split bosch vs MSD. MSD is much cheaper, you can get one local if you need one. take a look in most race cars and you will find MSD.

Agree w/ T77911S. Nothing wrong w/ Bosch. It's just that the MSD does the same thing @ a lower cost. You can run wider plug gaps w/ the MSD, but I haven't seen any data to show if there actually is an improvement over stock gaps w/ Bosch.

Thank you for your answer.
Question: Would you even consider buying a used permatune(to save money for now, bigger fish to fry) or should I buy the complete MSD set up? (box, coil, tach adapter, wires) Thanks for the input. |

i wouldn't consider a used permatune. Though if you dig into it there are reports of some of the types/colors being more reliable than others. MSD is relatively cheap, and tried/true. It's one of those things I don't want to think about, just have it work.

A good used Bosch is a good alternative if you want to save some money.

Apparently the older Permatunes were better than the newer ones. You will have to search, but you can tell by their color; blue or silver. I think I'd rather go w/ a used Bosch than a used Permatune, although how long does any part that is 30 yrs old have left? For the MSD to work I think you need all the parts you mentioned.
Better check w/ them re the coil. I'm not sure if you can mount the Blaster 2 coil upside down.

Permatunes are not repairable...they "pot" them...i.e. dip the whole enchilada in tar.
When they break, you gather twenty up and create an anchor....a crappy anchor.

If you want to mess with the wiring, MSD is the way to go. To use the factory coil location, you want to get their "High Vibration" coil. If you go with a Bosch Box, it is plug and play. Also, unlike Permatune, a Bosch box can be repaired.
