Should I or shouldn't I? 993 Cup or Fuchs RSR
 

So I have a choice - 993 Cup wheels (I have two sets, one with the 8" special front wheels for track use) or the Rota Fuchs in RSR finish.

The car is a late 80's 911 with 993 mirrors, a Ruf front spoiler and "Mini" RSR 3.8 decklid. I am starting to think that this car looks better with the 993 Cup wheels than the fuchs, given the "modern" nature of some of the other body updates. There is a 993 engine in the car and 993 TT brakes.

Right now the car is set up with long studs and factory spacers to use the 993 cup wheels. I would have to change the studs if I decided to keep the fuchs on most of the time.

Any thoughts? I thought it would look better than it does...

If the intended purpose is track use, I'm not sure I'd want to run the Rota wheels. I've seen too many replica Fuchs break under hard track use. My disclaimer is that I have not seen the way the Rota replica was designed so perhaps it's a better replica than some of the others out there. I know a lot of effort went into designing them but they are still a cast replica that probably weigh a lot more than a forged original Fuchs.

The 993 replicas you have are probably very heavy. I know the set of 17" Mille Miglia Cup 1 reps I have are close to 23 LBs each which is a boat anchor at each corner. I believe my 16 x8 and 9 real Fuchs were something like 18 and 19 lbs each. My Jeff Alton 3 piece Fuchs are 14.8 lbs front (17x8) and the rears are 15.8 (17x9) so quite a few lbs lighter than even the 16" Fuchs. And being forged centers with quality rim shells they should be really strong. Already have 9 track days on them and they're great.

The 993 wheels I have are Porsche factory, not replicas. However, they are heavy!

Not sure I would run the Rotos on the track after having done a web search on failures of there products. They do seem to stand behind there products and the Fuchs replica may be stronger than some of there rice rims.

Factory 993 Cups seem to be a good wheel for the track. They are plentiful. Allow access to some of the better track tires. Weigh under 20 lbs. They are a great design for keeping the brakes cool. Most PCA track groups technically alow all Porsche rims but could diss-alow aftermarket rims.

So, if it is a track car and you are set up for it, I would stay w the cups.

Having said that, I do like to looks of Fuchs on a 911.

This car, while pretty much fully setup for track use, is a daily driver. :D

I vote for the 993 cup wheels. They look great on a silver car in my opinion. You have a stunning car by the way.

Yeah, I wanted to like the Fuchs on this but I think they are the wrong direction. Maybe if the center were black it would be a bit better - but I have gone far enough in the modern direction that the cups may be the best fit.

Could be a posting in the For Sale section tonight after all.

I've seen the cups blacked out (satin black) and think they look great on 964s. I'd go with that.

The rotas look good as is, though, too.

Or, and here's a better idea, use the cup wheels and sell me the RSR's for cheap.

Amen to this! Any high offset wheel looks way out of place, dare I say ugly, on a torsion bar car.

Dish is a must on the older cars, but I prefer zero dish on the most modern 911's.

Also, that silver widebody just above looks great!

Sorry, I missed that part. If OE, they're definitely strong. But I still caution against any cast Fuchs replica for track use.

Can you share more pics of the "mini 3.8 tail"? And who's is it?

Those are period correct for that bodystyle, clone or not!

This is a Getty Design piece. It is an RSR 3.8 tail but downsized so it looks right on a Carrara flared car. Carbon Fiber wing element and cover plates. Fit is pretty good, but the finish took some work. Next steps with that are to mount an AC condenser in it.

Since you're headed towards the modern look, I'd keep the Cups, and get whatever bumpers you like that get rid of the Accursed Accordions...
