getting alternators out of housing?
I am told my alternator is shot so I removed the fan housing with the alternator in tact. I have removed the 6 nuts that appear to hold the altinator in place as well as the large nut with the shins at the rear.
Do I need to pound on the 6 studs to break it free or am I missing something? The number on the housing is 930 106 102 4R. Thanks in advance. |

DO NOT POUND ON THE STUDS!!!
Tap lightly on them ONLY. Ask how I know - I ended up cracking the alternator case using a little too much force and ended up having to buy a new alternator. The metal of the alternator housing is very brittle. TAP LIGHTLY! |
I have tapped and hit them hard, no luck. The alt should slid out in the direction I'm hitting them, right? Do I need to take anything off the shaft first?

DO NOT TAP THE STUDS. YOU'LL BUGGER THEM.
Here's what I did (it's the method recommended by John Walker): I took an old blanket and folded it up several times to act as padding. I put the padding on the garage floor, and then I took two pieces of 4x4 and put them on top of the padding, far enough apart that they were wider than the alternator, but narrower than the outside of the fan housing. I then removed the nuts holding the alternator into the housing. And then gently, but firmly, I "rapped" the housing from a distance of about 3 to 6 inches on to the the 4x4 pieces. After doing this twice, the alternator dropped out on to the padding. No damage to the alternator and no damage to the housing. YMMV. |
this has been discussed a zillion times if you do a quick search. try this thread from back in '02...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=60368&highlight=alternator+housin g

85 carrera. Is this normal?
With the car off. The electric windows still operate.
Also when I stop the car with the turn signal flashing I am left with the yellow indicator still lit? This turns off when I straighten out the stalk. I've had this car for 10 years and never noticed these items until recently. Is it normal and if not what could it be?
