Carrera starting & running problem
 

After changing spark plugs, air filter and fuel filter, my 88 Carrera runs roughly when started, and dies after about 2 minutes. If I try to increase RPM it dies instantly. Then has to be left for about an hour, before will start agian and repeats same symptoms.
I have done a quick search on the board but have not yet had the time to run the full set of tests suggested by Doug Suds in his tech article. But I have tried swapping the fuel pump/DME relay for a spare, checked the fuel pump fuse (#6) and have jumpered power to the fuel pump and can hear it buzzing. Since the engine runs roughly I assume the spark plugs are getting current.
I am wondering if I dislodged something when changing the fuel filter, air filter or spark plugs.
The fuel injectors, distributor cap & rotor, O2 sensor, alternator, cylinder head temperature sensor and coil are fairly new (<15K miles).
Do these symptoms suggest anything in particular that I should check?

Check that your plug wires are on correctly. Also could be the fuel filter hasn't filled completly.
If it was running good before it's probably one or the other.

+1 on spark plug wire routing...better double check it. If that doesn't do it, you might want to test your reference sensor.

If neither of those does the trick, I'm betting that you have an intermittant problem with either your coil, or your fuel pump. Yes, I know it's whirring...but I've had the problem before...and it sounds like you may have a similar problem.

Next time your car dies, disconnect the vacuum hose at the top of your ICV, spray a little carb cleaner into the hose, and quickly reconnect and attempt to start engine. If the car immediately starts (then dies), you have fuel starvation. If it doesn't start after spraying into the vacuum, then you most likely have a spark/electric/electronic issue.
