fan restoration

Gang,
I am brand new here and am in need of a fan restoration for my 71 911S.
I have seen/heard really good things about a member named 'Flying Jay'.
Does anyone have his contact info?
Please PM me, if possible.
Thanks Much!
Jay

check out the work of Mark Mots in So Cal - old school, does em one at a time out of his garage. Fans are all he does.. You are going to have to be patient, the wait time is like 2-3 months, but you get what you wait for.. here is mine. Super good guy to boot.

For a '71 S you probably want your fan and housing to look as they did originally. We have developed our own chemistry to etch fans and housings to achieve the look as the cars sat in showrooms. That said, there has been some opinion on the absolute darkness of the original cars and we can cater to lighter and darker tones depending on your preference. Have done fans and housings for 6 proper '73 RSs and many more early Ss, etc. Some pics.

There are a number of threads on this. Lots of opinions as well. What is correct fan color

Clean and preserve with Gibbs, I say.

On mine i didn’t want a fully painted or restored look, trying to retain the look that mag takes on, so we did a water jet clean and a matte clear, coated the center bits and new rivets.

I had mine cerakote plated when the motor was out for some work a few years ago, and I'm really happy with the way it turned out. It also seems to resist dirt much better. Lots of colors to choose from also.

Hi All
Been thinking about having mine done as well. Two questions:
1- What’s the cost to do the fan + housing?
2- What’s the lead time?

Thanks,
JT

After disassemble it’s 20 minutes of blasting and 5 minutes of applying a $30 product.

^^^

That depends on what end result you are after. A painted, pitted fan, hub & housing or something a little nicer. It takes about 6 hours for me to properly do a fan & housing filling in pitting, fixing chips, removing, plating, riveting back in the hub, etc.

Thanks for the reply Dpmulvan.

I was looking for prices from one of the key shops doing the Cerakote process (like Shaun@True6) when people ship them their existing 911 fan & housing.

Think I remember seeing the current prices most shops are charging is like $175-$200 for the set.
Does this sound right???

Regards,
JT

JT, I think that's realistic from a local Cerakote shop, just make sure they know how to properly surface prep cast magnesium. I bake fans and housings twice, and then only use H and E series which requires baking. A lot of places use air cure C series which isn't as durable and doesn't have a nice sheen.

Hi Shaun.
For weeks now… I’ve been buying parts from Pelican chasing down a few small oil leaks. (changed valve cover gaskets, timing chain housings oil feed lines/cover gaskets, both large rubber w/ metal fittings oil lines and factory 4 oil return tubes) and finally…just about ready to drive the car again!!

If I knew the car would have been out of commission for this long… I would have packed up the fan + housing and sent them to you.

BTW-When I had the vc’s off…bit the bullet and did valve adjustment, using the SNAP GAP system for the first time. Have to say I really liked it.Very clever system.

Will get the fan/housing out to you one of these days.

JT

PM me what the cost for be for 3.2 fan assembly. THX.

jtt84911, did you find the SNAP GAP somewhere recently? I looked a few months ago and all the info I found was old.

Thanks
Foster

Hi Foster,
Had to check my records before responding.
I purchased my kit directly from Snapgap.us in May 2024 for the total price of $188.

Was curious about the reason behind your question…but after some Google-ing… get where you’re coming from…. it appears you can’t purchase it for the time being.

Luckily my kit included enough new shims and backup locking screws to do many future valve adjustments…but too bad for you or others looking to buy their first. The kit/concept is just too good (in my + many others opinions) not to be offered by again by Snapgap or by another company who has acquired the sales rights.

Hope you find one !
JT
