Steering Rack Rebuild - Loose Pinion Roller Bearings

I'm in the middle of rebuilding my steering rack and as I pulled out the pinion, some of the roller bearings came out with it. Of course once one comes out, they all come out:

Is this normal, are the roller bearings normally held in place with grease, or should the casing hold them in place?

If it needs replaced, any idea on sources?

Thanks, Gordo

Whatever

I wanted to get something done, so I regreased and put them back in. Seemed to work fine. I did look up on the internet - appears some are just made that way (loose in the retainer, held in place by grease).

Good call. There is not a lot of info on steering racks. There are 2-3 rebuild thread here in the archives, but not easy to find. If the Wiki ever gets done, that will change.

I ended up replacing the needle bearing with a new ball bearing. There is absolutely no slop now. I also swaped out the rusted needle bearing further up the chain. It is covered by the rubber boot. I used two bearings for this one.

Here is the link that I used.
http://cgi.ebay.com/10-Bearing-6703Z-17x23x4-Shielded-VXB-Ball-Bearings_W0QQitemZ140267377438QQcmdZViewItemQQptZL H_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item140267377438&_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

Basically it is a 6703Z double sealed bearing.

In fact I have some extra since I only needed three but I had to buy ten. PM me and we can work something out if you want.

Here is my old post which has some bearing part numbers.
SC Steering Rack DIY Bearing Replace

I try start all my "how to" type posts with "DIY" so that when searching, I can type DIY in the search engine to help find my old posts.
