Heater controls illumination

I'm hoping someone can help me....

I was looking under the dash of my 1984 911 and noticed one of the bulbs behind the heater control panel was not working. It was the one on the top left hand side.

I replaced it and when I turned on the parkers, it came on as a bright light...

I noticed that on the panel in front of the bulb, there appears to be some paint missing and I was wondering if it were painted, would that act as a diffuser to "spread" the light.

Should some symbol be where the paint is missing or should it be painted black??

I was just trying to work out how to get rid of the bright light.

Cheers,

Geoff.

The word 'FAN' should be there, in a font larger than the 'DEF. OFF' (sorry, I don't have a picture of it). A piece of black tape will work temporarily. To fix it right you may have to get your hands on a used heater control. I see now that these icons are 'stick-on' over those perforations... didn't know that!

You're missing an icon.

Hmmm, what do ya know. My '84 is different from the Aussi model. Mine has the word FAN, but I do have the single upper fan lever, not the double as you guys do.

Isn't the fan control on the top right??.....where my Fan sticker is.

Henri, what is that icon??

Can anyone else with a 1984 confirm what is missing.

I just checked against my Owners manual and all it has in that spot is a square box, maybe Oz delivered cars had that blank.....

I was doing a bit more investigation and read where, the ventilation control from 1977 had two upper knobs if factory air conditioning was fitted. Cars without factory air conditioning continued to have only one upper knob.

Dentist, does your's have A/C?

Cheers,

Geoff.

Yes, mine has A/C but only the single upper slider. The left side of the FAN range is for vent air, once you go past the middle the variable speed fan is activated and the little fan icon illuminates. I thought the dual fan slider was a 1987+ feature. Learn something everyday! My 1984 owner's manual illustration is also different from yours... it shows the single fan slider. I'll post some pics of mine to help

The controls for the A/C are on the console in front of the shifter.

It's interesting that you only have one top knob.

In my car the left knob controls the fresh air intake flaps, while the right knob controls the fan speed.

That's why I think I shouldn't have the FAN word....I'm confused.....

Cheers,

Geoff.

Thanks sus911,

You have confirmed for me that the finish should be painted black.

I did have the chance to look at a 1983 SC and it also had the same.

I've got the touch up paint out already......:) :) :)

Thanks again mate.

Cheers,

Geoff.
