Smog pump dead.. do I need to replace?

It looks like the smog pump in my car is dead.. pulley turns fine, but no air coming out of it.

The car runs fine and passes smog..

I did a search and found threads where folks have removed the pump/air injection system and it sounds like more than I want to get into.

Can I leave the dead pump in place as is or do I need to replace it?

Thanks!

Mike

If you can already pass smog inspection, I would think that you only need to leave it on if you have to have it for a visual inspection. Mine is long gone on my car, but we don't have smog inspections at all here. There are so many members on here from CA, that I'm sure someone will know for sure if you have to keep it.

No way to get around it, you'll need to have the pump on the car when you do the biannual smog inspection. Part of the inspection is a "visual" to make sure all the OEM emissions equipment is in place.
However, there is a question regarding if problems or issues can occur without an operational smog pump. I was considering disconnecting (taking the belt off) between smog checks. I posted a question asking if that could cause other issues to develop. I did not get a big response, but one member indicated disconnecting the smog pump (or I suppose having a defective one) could cause problems with the EGR valve, which are hard to come by and expensive.
Perhaps someone will respond to this question when responding to your post.

I am also looking for a smog (air) pump for my 78 911SC. I would be interested in buying it from you if you did not already sell it. I can be reached at scotstar85@verizon.net.

No doubt about it, your car will run cleaner, and no doubt pass smog with flying colors without that pesky smog pump pumping out all that smog :D

You will definitely need it for a visual inspection but It won't benefit you much for passing Smog. Got to love Ca.

I would just remove and carefully store it in between inspections.
I have seen more than one sieze up when left in place without the belt over an extended period.
