Calif. SMOG test w a turbo 3.2?

I miss having a turbo'd Porsche and some times think of sticking a turbo on my 85 3.2 Carrera.

I am thinking I would have to take it off every 2 years and convert my car to near stock to pass. Would end up with low compression pistons at some point (8/1?).

Any thoughts?

Could I build it in a way to just add a cat and get it to pass? ;)

Talk to the DMV/BAR Referree and they will tell you the requirements. If you take a later engine and transfer EVERYTHING and do a few mods to the sensors, you will pass.

the nice thing is you could use all stock 930 parts for the exhaust path so it should pass visual and with using a hi flow cat after the turbo you would probably have no issues

I remember the "Old" days. I used to remove the needed components every year to do the smog test, finally I got "Smart" I got a different chip with the needed values and it passed every time and for the rest of the 11 months it was nothing BUT pleasure; we now don't have to worry about it anymore here in Florida :D

We have a visual in Ca.

I think all I have to do is have a Cat and pass the shif test but not sure.

Ben, using a stock 930 w cat migh work, then could pull it off.

It might be possible to find a station that dose not know the 911 and as long as it looks like a stock install and has a cat I might be ok. Not sure if a turbo and large aftermarket intercooler will triger the visual.

I wonder if the Calif. EBA computer always says if it has a turbo or not?

I believe this is the problem. If your car isn't turbo from the factory, I don't think you'll be able to pass even if it passes the sniff test.

Removing the turbo every two years is the other option.
