1983 911 SC Fireball Issues

I have a 1983 911SC with PMO Carbs using the Fireball XR700 Ignition. For some reason the car started to back fire.I removed the cap and could hear the trigger shorting out, also I could see spark coming from the positive coil. The optical unit is sending a signal to the coil when it shouldn't.Do you think the XR700 is NFG?

Is it possible to use the Pertronix on a 1983 911?

Thanks, Dave

David,

Can't help with the problems you are experiencing but I can tell you the XR700's are very durable. I had one on my '87 Toyota Land Cruiser for nearly 10 years (salt water spray from beach runs etc) and it never once gave me a problem.

I recommend seeing what you can do to isolate the issue before you replace parts.

Best of luck, Gordo
