Noise with no idea

I took the Carrera out this evening and starting hearing this funny noise. I've heard it before but it's always gone away. Well this time it got bad and persisted. It's sounds like it's rotational. At first I thought maybe a wheel bearing or something to that effect. But it starts with acceleration, slowly then as speed increases the 'rotation' increases. But when I let off the accelerator it will stop. Also if I have the accelerator down and put in the clutch it stops. Any ideas?? Clutch going out? :(
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

I think we will need more that that.

pitch
source
loudness
nature: grinding, or flapping, or scraping

Ok, let's see...
PITCH, not quite sure, certainly not a high pitch.
SOURCE, kinda sounds like it's coming from the right rear of the car.
LOUDNESS, Fairly loud when starting out then mellows to a constant drone
NATURE, that's what I meant by rotational, certainly isn't a grinding noise nor flappling. maybe like clacking?

Thanks

Is your gear oil full/fresh?

ruby911 05-29-2009 03:22 AM

Does it increase with increase in wheel movement or motor movement (i.e. does it change with speed of the motor or speed of the car)?

Probably nothing a new set of Altons and a 3.6 won't cure ;)

Good thought Mark, it should be as it was changed late last year. But will check.

Me thinks it's motor. THe odd thing is the stopping completley when the clutch is engaged.
I do think the wheels would fix it! 3.6? na but will go faster.

What does it do when the car is in neutral, with and without the clutch engaged?

Zeke 05-29-2009 11:52 AM

What happens to the noise each shift? I think you might have inferred that the noise went away on each clutch action, but I wanted to make sure.

If that's the case, I'm going to take a WAG and say check your trans and motor mounts.

Sunroof 05-29-2009 12:52 PM

Take a run, get up to speed, put it in neutral and that will tell you CV, wheel bearing, rotor issue engine or tranny mounts.....then turn while in neutral, thats when the wheel bearing, CV and mounts are stressed the most. Once you discount that, check the fan belt (with cold engine) to see if its loose. After start-up feel the top of the fan housing to check on an alternator bearing vibration. If all these are okay...continue to Plan B because........this is the extent of my knowledge. Best of luck.

I will tell you this.................a few weeks ago I was experiencing a crazy metallic noise in my left rear. It turned out that a small welded flange that connects the heat exchanger to the exhaust port (where muffler attaches) broke and the vibration caused a high pitched metallic sound!! Fixed in an instance.

Good advice there. Look at any and all fasteners - muffler straps, engine tin hardware, etc. It may be a simple fix. Things tend to come loose with constant vibration. Let us know if you discover the source.
