Heating and defogging SC questions.
Today I took upon myself to improve the heating and defogging characteristics of my 78SC, in prevision for more daily driving.
First problem I had no heat on the driver side windshield for defogging. The obvious reason can be seen on the pic below: a hose was not connected, easy to fix :). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1243778946.jpg Second problem: the footwell heater on passenger side has a large gap that lets cold air in. Is this normal, or is a piece missing? That would explain not so good heat in the car... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1243779112.jpg Third problem: The fan inside the plastic housing shown in the picture below makes a horrible whine when it starts, and keeps whining intermittently when on. Is there an easy fix for that, like opening and oiling something? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1243779332.jpg Thanks guys. |
For your second problem, you are missing 2 pieces. A connecting flange that goes on the trunk side and an air distributor that goes in the cabin. The two pieces screw together to hold the control box in place. Will probably also need a couple of clamping springs to hook the control box to the flange.
For problem #3, I would suggest that you pull the blower motor and clean it all up. There are a couple of threads here on the board that explains how to do it. Here is one that has some good pics. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/254839-fresh-air-blower-repaired-archive.html When you have it on the bench, you can always hook up a 12V battery to it to try to pinpoint the source of the noise. |
In pic #3, the fresh air control with 1 cable on 2 flapper valves connected with a rod. The flappers need to be synchronized. Mine were not and I had cold air continuously dumping into the passenger foot well when the controls were off. Simple fix is to adjust the flappers to be in the same position.

Thanks for the replies. I opened the fan box and oiled the motor through the oiling hole shown in the linked thread. The annoying whine is gone. Just got to order the missing parts and all should work as new. Cheers.
