Too much heat in the 73.

Ive been driving my 73 with the 3.2 swap for a few months now, off and on, and its been great, except today. Today I went to the golf club 32 miles away and realized that I have heat comming from the defroster vents and footwell area. No adjusting of levers stop the heat from comming out somewhere. It was a miserable drive home in 80 plus degree heat with additional engine heat added.

So what do I need to do to stop the flow of hot air. I'm thinking of removing the hose going to the flapper boxes and just taping off the end of the flapper boxes for now.

Will this do the trick? I'm not sure how much trouble this will be as I attached the hose as the motor was being lifted. Is there another way to stop the heat?

It would be my guess that the flapper boxes are not completely closing. What I would do is remove the hoses that go from the exchangers to the flapper boxes and look up and see if they are closing. It could be that it might be as simple as a cable adjustment.

Considering your car is a 73' there's a good chance that your flapper boxes are rusty and may not be closing all the way.

If the problem is in your "pull cable" you can get under the car and undo the 6mm nut/lock washer/washer/ bolt that holds the pull cable to the flapper box. Then your flapper boxes (if they are not rusty or broken) will spring OPEN and you will have no heat at all. (until you fix it)

If they don't spring OPEN, maybe some penetrating oil on the spring and the visible moving part of the flapper is a good start.

Don't lose little tiny bolt with the hole in it if you take it out! Kind of a specialty part.

I lived with the same problem with my 1970...for too long. Finally this past winter I tackled the dreaded job of replacing the flapper boxes. Safely removed all the nuts on the drivers side and snapped all 3 on the passenger side. After some tricky drilling with a right angle drill I managed to drill out and re-tap 2 out of the 3 holes for new studs. Sure enough the passenger side was so rusted it wouldn't close all the way. My first ride this spring on a warm day was priceless not to have that annoying heat come into the cabin! I would guess you have a similar issue. Good luck replacing the boxes if that's what you decide to do. Use plenty of penetrating oil and have lots of patience!

I don't know why you would remove the hoses that go from the exchangers to the flapper boxes just to test.

I agree: Just get under there & look up and see if they are closing as someone operates the lever (or crawl in & out yourself).

Be sure you use jack stands and a safety fail-safe first!

These things should have been plated or made of stainless not just painted.

I'd plate them if you repair them.
