No Start on a 3.2 after rebuild
Pretty sure I got fuel, I can smell gas out the tailpipe when I turn it over.
got spark, an old spark plug arcs when you turn it over. and the timing is perfect - #1 intake valve finishes closing right before the piston rises back up to TDC, and the same sequence works for #4. It turns over right, just doesn't 'catch', not even a misfire. Now I'm checking what else could be wrong.... At Cyl.1 TDC, while the crank and the distributor are on their marks, the flywheel pin is pointing at 12 o'clock. Is this right, or should it be pointing at the reference sensor? |
Where is the Z1 mark when #1 is at TDC?
|
Your igntion timing is off. How did you set the timing?
If timing is good, check compressiion. |
Where are you located? Sometimes these things are tough to diagnose with sporadic postings... Might be a local Pelicanite nearby to help figure it out....

Thats exactly where I was going- timing is off. We have no info how valve timing was set- just that the valve opens and closes with the #1TDC. We also don't know position of distributor at Z1 on #1 TDC. My 3.2 rotor is not centered on the timing mark on the distributor housing- it is mildly offset. He could be one tooth off on the distributor gear. We need more info.

When I installed the cams, I followed the directions in Wayne's Engine rebuild book, 930 marks point up when the distributor is at the #1 notch, and the crank is at Z1.
Then install the chain tensioners, and use a dial gauge to dial in the cam timing, then install the lifters. If TDC #1 is 12 o'clock on the distributor, then the #1 intake valve should close around 9 o'clock, right? I did the cam timing at Munks motorsports in Detroit. Just don't feel like driving back (1.5 hours on the highway) there with the whole car in tow to figure out what else it could be. |
The other thing that could be off are the crank/reference ( whatever they are called, can't remember right now) sensors. Try switching them around at the connector end. Had mine mixed up, switched them and it fired right up.
