Dynamat and the 911..
New at this Porsche stuff.... took the '79 SC on a 500 mile road trip Sunday. Gig Harbor up to Seattle, breakfast with the son and his g/f, then up over Stevens Pass to Leavenworth, over to Wenatchee, along the Columbia River Gorge to I-90, back over Snoqualmie Summit to Seattle, and home again.
Car ran GREAT (my first road trip in it), but GEEZ was it LOUD!!! Road noise was pretty draining. In the Vette world a lot of guys use Dynamat-type sound deadener under the carpet. You guys use it on the Porsches? and with good results?? It adds a little weight (around 30lbs) but the results can be quite dramatic. I'll be changing out my shifter bushings in the near future and thought it might be a good time to pull the seats and carpet and install Dynamat. Thoughts? Thanks, Rob |

Sounds like a great drive you took there. Yes, lots of Porsche owners here have used Dynamat as well as other products. When I added a noise suppressor to my car, it was a kind that got painted/rolled/sprayed on and had some kind of micro beads in it that supposedly converted sound to heat. So you'll find lots of other products used. Do a search for Dynamat, and you'll find comments about different kinds. It's a nice project, but look out for the "while you're in there" sysdrome.

Just remember that Dynamat is designed to reduce vibrational noise, and not much else. It works incredibly well on flat panels of sheet metal like floors, the insides of door sheet metal, etc. When placed on a panel that is sturdy and not really prone to vibration, it is less effective.
Also, coupe, or targa? If it's a targa, IMO you're going to waste a lot of time with dynamat. A lot of noise travels through the air. Crack your window 1/4" while driving for the best example. Another thing to consider is the age of your tires and what kind of tires you're using. Different brands of tires have widely varying road noise. And, of course, it depends on what kind of muffler you have. Also, is the sound-deadening pad in front of the engine still intact? Good luck!
