87 911: Sloppy Steering Column

I test drove an 87 911 today that I liked, but the top of the steering column was moving all over the place. I'm not sure if it was something as simple as a loose clamp or a worn out upper bushing.

I'm guessing that it is the result of a rather large owner grabbing the wheel to climb in and out of the car.

Is this a common problem? Is it a complicated or expensive fix?

Thanks.

Common problem if it is just the bushing located just under the wheel itself.

How did the steering feel minus the wheel being "loose"?

The actual steering felt fine. It seemed that I was able to move the steering wheel up, down and side to side about an inch each way.

I was just looking through the parts catalog and I see that there is a quick fix sleeve, so it must be common. I'd prefer to do a proper fix should I end up buying the car.

1" either way is well beyond a bushing problem. I rebuilt mine not long ago and without the bearing in the housing I don't think the steering wheel would move that much. JMO

If the lateral movement is not extreme the fix is fairly simple...

You can buy the repair sleeve ($9.75) from our Host:

Remove the cover around the steering colume and see what's going on,if you can move the wheel 1" in all directions in a lateral plane something is broke.

Pick all the plastic out under the steering wheel and install the 928 part mentioned above and not have the problem again.
pull steering wheel and the C clip then the bearing race is right there

It's the bushing, My 86 carrera was doing it and I drove over to my uncles porsche shop and he has a porsche master tech who helped me yank off the wheel and hammer on a new $2 dollar bearing, column is straight as an arrow now.

It could also be the nuts that hold the column assembly inside the dash. They were loose on my 87 Carrera, TRE tightened them up when they lowered, aligned, and balanced my car. The bolts are right behind the speedometer.
