Question 1984 911 White Smoke...HELP

I have a triple black 84 911 with 65k. I only drive it about 1K miles per year. I finally had a chance to get it out today for a nice hard drive.

After about a half hour of running I stopped to talk to someone for about 15 minutes. The car was idling the whole time. When I went to drive away, huge billows of smoke came from the exhaust, very white.

After about ten seconds, it cleared and have had no problem since. Despite the smoke, the car ran great. No idle or performance problems. I can drive the car hard, leave off the gas, allowing the motor to slow the car, no smoke.

The only thing I noticed prior was if the car was not used for a long period of time, I would get some smoke at start up.

The car runs great but I can't think of any other time I let it idle that long.

I thought about the oil being overfilled but by the time I checked it, it was sitting for about an hour after I shut it down. The oiol was right in between the marks.

Any suggestions?

New to the forum. Would appresiate any help.

Thanks

O.K., here's a biggie. From what you posted (in bold) it sounds like you checked the oil with the engine off. Is that correct? The oil must be checked with the engine warmed to operating temperature and idling on a flat surface. Under those conditions, the oil should be between the two marks. Oil expands when heated so a reading in a cold tank should be lower than needed. If the oil was at proper level when cold, then it will expand to "overfill" when warmed to operating temp. Sounds like too much oil and, if so, I'm surprised it didn't smoke more than you described.

Take off the air cleaner cover, remove the air filter, and see if you have oil inside the air cleaner housing--that's another clue.

White smoke can also be created by brake fluid. If the master cylinder is leaking into the booster it will puddle there and eventually cause the diaphram to deteriorate. Then fluid can be sucked into the engine during high or long (like idling) periods and produce white smoke. I'm not saying it isn't oil, it could be that too, but it's worth checking for brake fluid consumption.
regards,
Phil

Thanks for your help. Will check items today. Now you both have me thinking. As far as the oil goes, I added some Mobil One when I took the car out of winter storage.

I filled it to the top of the full mark on a cold engine.

The brake fluid could be a possibility as I painted the calipers over the winter. Although I took some of the fluid out before I compressed the calipers, maybe some could have backed up in the system.........

Either way, I appreciate your replies. Will let you know...
