Do yourself a favor, DME
On my way back from picking up my daughter from gymnastics in my 1987 Carrera with 54,000 mi. my baby died! Couldn't understand it. Cruising along at 55 mph it was like someone just reached over and turned the ignition off. Luckily I was only 2 miles from home and my buddy came to my rescue with a tow rope and his truck. So I logged in to Pelican parts and began my search. It seemed that all the threads I could find pointed to the DME relay under the drivers seat and they were right! On new relay later and I am back in business.
So, thank you my fellow Pelicans and quick shipping from Wayne! ![]() |

Moral of this story, the $35(?) new DME relay should always be in your glovebox...

You mean that DME relay only lasted 22 years??
What happened to Porsche quality??

Dang! Your garage floor looks nicer than the the floor in my house!
P.S. The car doesn't look half bad either. ![]()

Very comon VW and Porsche bug. Unfortunately, there was a batch of relays made in Hungary that went much faster - some lasted less than a year. My guess is that the switch to Pb-free solder was the root cause. So you should always carry a spare. Cheap insurance.

I carry one as well as a spare fuel pump relay, furl pump, belt, fuel injector seals. That's just me but I would rather have it if it needs replacing hours from home.

I have one in the glovebox, and one in the toolbox in the garage.
I also keep a spare black & a red relay also.

Great to hear everything worked out well!
I wear my DME relays woven together as a jacket. There are 238 of them. And since I drive an SC, I never have to use them up! =oD j/k...
