Turn Signals vs Indicators
 

My turn signals work fine. My flashers work fine. My headlights and taillights work fine.

However, when I turn on the turn signals, both dahsboard indicator lights illuminate. They blink @ the correct speed. This happens whether the signal stalk is set for left or right. Also, the indicator lights do not illuminate when the flashers are on.

Does this sound like a ground issue? The relay itself? Or the switch?

Hey Paul - Don't know for sure - but I'd check the wiring.

Mine has done that occasionally. I think the problem is in the stalk. Try shooting some electrical contact cleaner into the switch.

The problem is likely the bulbs. You probably have low wattage bulbs, they need to draw more current for the flasher relay to work properly. I forget the wattage, but lots are about 13 watts and I think you need 20.

Mine does that when the alt isnt charging or the car is idling really low. When the alt is charging properly and at normal running/idle speeds it goes back to normal.

A similar thing was happenning the last few days. The only difference was that then the signals wouldn't work. I tightened up the socket and now the lights work perfectly; I just get both indicators going @ once.

P_M, I read your thread about the low wattage bulbs. I think mine are OK. I recently replaced one w/ the same that I've had for years w/o any previous issues.

John, I'll see what happens during a cold start when I have a high idle.

Had same issue with mine. The contacts in the column get cruded up and need to be cleaned. In fact I had issues with my high beams sometimes staying on and that was also crud in the same area.

Had a similar problem with my 73.5, and thought it was grounds. When my brake lights, turn signals, and back up lights failed last week, I suspected a fuse. When I replaced the fuse, all lights functioned again and the blinking in unison of the indicators stopped! I guess the bit of resistance caused by an old fuse was enough to throw off the delicat balance of the system. Just a thought to pass on--just in case.
